The Positions
The Interns will perform a variety of complex, specialized and responsible duties in support of functions and projects of the Public Works Department, Engineering Division.
There are six open positions in the following sections: Transportation (2), Construction/Survey (1), Facilities (1), and Admin (2).
The work schedule is 20-40 hours per week, in-person at the assigned Engineering section.
Examples of Duties
Transportation Section
- Maintain and/or improve databases in Microsoft Excel software program.
- Field data collection, perform general and technical work support of the Transportation Engineering staff as necessary.
Construction/Survey Section
- Assist construction inspectors in the field with public works construction projects.
- Gather information and record construction materials data from work crews and contractors.
- Observe construction practices and report to inspectors.
Facilities Section
- Perform cursory architectural design review and project management assignments.
- Assist project managers with preparing and processing project documentation, invoices, and other required administrative tasks.
- Participate in project site walks including prebid, preconstruction, and construction progress inspections.
Admin Intern
- Provide general administrative support to the staff including scanning , organizing, and packing of files.
Transportation Section
- Possession of a BA/BS or currently enrolled in a four-year university majoring in Civil Engineering, or other closely related field.
Construction/Survey Section
- Currently enrolled in a four-year university majoring in Civil Engineering, Construction management, surveying, or other closely related field, and/or graduation from high school and two years experience in a field related to street/highway inspection or construction. Experience working outdoors around construction equipment is highly desirable.
Facilities Section
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at a four-year university with major course work in architectural, engineering, or a closely related field.
Admin Intern
- Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
