The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State has 9 tenure-track faculty and 2 teaching faculty, with an NAE member and over $2.1M in annual research expenditure. The Department is home to one of the top programs in the country for Injury Biomechanics. The Department offers an ABET accredited B.S. degree; several M.S. degree programs (traditional and online), including an M.S. in Injury Biomechanics; a Graduate Certificate in Injury Biomechanics; and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or Biomedical Imaging. Currently, we have approximately 130 undergraduate students, 45 M.S. and 25 Ph.D. students. The department is committed to building a diverse faculty preeminent in its missions of research, teaching, and service to the community. Candidates who have experience engaging with diverse faculty, staff, and students, and contributing to an inclusive environment may share their perspectives on these subjects in their application materials.
Located in Midtown Detroit, the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the James and Patricia Anderson College of Engineering at Wayne State University (WSU) invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position, beginning in Fall 2026. For senior candidates, appointment with tenure is possible. We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose research focuses on Imaging Systems (including photoacoustic imaging, optical coherence tomography, multimodality, molecular imaging, or other methods related to organ/in vivo imaging). Outstanding candidates whose expertise complements existing departmental strengths in injury biomechanics, biomaterials and tissue engineering, systems biology, reproductive health, rehabilitation robotics, and traumatic brain injury, will receive special consideration.
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field and demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in both research and teaching.
Applications must include 1) curriculum vitae, 2) teaching and research statements, 3) names and addresses of at least three references. Links to a professional website such as Google Scholar or DBLP are recommended.
For full consideration, applications must be submitted by Jan 15, 2026. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.
About Biomedical Engineering Department-Wayne State University
Wayne State biomedical engineers improve the quality of human life. Rooted in a partnership between the College of Engineering and School of Medicine which dates back more than 80 years, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has long been at the forefront of discovery and innovation.
Biomedical engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary field which integrates engineering, biology and life sciences. Students studying BME are actively engaged in an area which has human health and welfare as its primary focus. Biomedical engineers view the human body as a complex system, its diseases and injuries as breakdowns in that system, and medical interventions as design alternatives for the repair of that system.
From foundational work in biomedical instrumentation and automotive safety, to modern advances in injury biomechanics and tissue engineering, Wayne State provides significant leadership in many areas which have already changed the world and will continue to shape its future.
