Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is hiring for a professional engineer to join the Planning & Program Management Section as a Drinking Water Systems and Infrastructure Planning Engineer. This position is of critical importance in carrying out a variety of public drinking water infrastructure planning, asset management capital program development and oversight within SPU's Water Line of Business. The position serves as an infrastructure planning engineer and asset manager for SPU's water distribution system assets including pump stations, steel storage tanks, water mains and related water infrastructure.

Job Responsibilities
Conduct water system planning and analysis to identify and prioritize critical upgrade work to be accomplished in the utilities' water distribution system.
Develop project alternatives, carry out options analysis, identify preferred alternatives, develop project scopes and budgets and secure project approvals.
Plan and coordinate for SPU's water main rehabilitation program.
Develop schematic level watermain and valve designs.
Problem-solve for issues that develop on the distribution system including infrastructure failures, and support/oversee planning for urgent water main repair/ replacement projects.
Work collaboratively with internal business partners to develop and implement asset management plans for water distribution system assets including pump stations, steel storage tanks, water mains and appurtenances.
Review and confirm requirements for development related water main extensions and complex water services.
Evaluate impacts of Right-Of-Way (ROW) projects on drinking water distribution assets and work with other parties to minimize the impacts as well as identify water infrastructure opportunity improvements.
Possible additional responsibilities depending on skills and interest may include:
Provide direction for seismic-related pipe replacement decisions and use of earthquake resistant pipes, and support regular updates of SPU’s water main seismic standards.
Manage SPU’s water pump station capital improvement and steel storage tank rehabilitation programs.
Develop planning level project cost estimates.

Qualifications
Experience: Five (5) years professional Civil Engineering experience.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; (or a combinations of education and/or training and/or experience, which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Education and Experience Equivalency: Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility (or ability to obtain the license prior to start date).
You will be successful if you have some of the following experience, skills, and abilities:
Experience in water and wastewater system planning, design, construction, and utility asset management.
Water system planning/engineering experience specific to distribution system water mains, pump stations, storage tanks, reservoirs, and related appurtenances.
Experience with water main condition assessment and water main rehabilitation programs.
Experience in utility infrastructure earthquake engineering including earthquake resistant pipe systems.
Knowledge of the operation of water system components such as control valves, pumps, and pressure-reducing valves.
Knowledge and familiarity with Arcview and ArcGIS applications is a plus.
The ability to write clear and concise technical memos and reports.
Demonstrated ability to successfully work well in a team environment and deliver complex multiyear projects.

Work Environment/Conditions
Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
Workplace Environment (Telework Expectation): This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office twice a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is $57.96 - $67.49 Hourly
