Description: The Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at the University of California, Davis, is recruiting for an open Lecturer position to offer instruction in the Applied Biological Systems Technology program.
Service dates are: Winter Quarter 2020: January 3, 2020 – March 20, 2020 Spring Quarter 2020: March 26, 2020 – June 11, 2020
The successful candidate will be expected to offer instruction providing the technical foundation, practical knowledge, and a hands-on experiential learning environment concerning: • farm machinery principles, operation and practices, • equipment and technology used on small farms, • engines and related technologies, • fabrication in wood, metal and other materials, and • teaching of agricultural mechanics for students in agricultural and environmental education credential programs.
The expected workload involves conducting lectures and laboratories for courses during the regular academic year (each quarter is 10 weeks long). The lecturer will initially teach the following courses: • ABT 015 Wood Properties and Fabrication • ABT 049 Field Equipment Operation • ABT 052 Field Equipment Welding • ABT 101 Engine Technology • ABT 142 Equipment and Technology for Small Farms
Following a potential for reappointment after Spring 2020, the lecturer would be expected to teach the following courses in addition to those listed above: • ABT 016 Metal Properties and Fabrication • ABT 317 Teaching Agricultural Mechanics
All courses with the exception of ABT 101 (3 units) are currently 2 units, with opportunities to revise the curriculum in the future as a part of a proposed agricultural and environmental technology major program, if approved. Other courses may need to be taught on a rotational basis. Safety and safe practice are of primary importance to the University of California and this position involves teaching courses in which safety is a major consideration. The successful candidate will ensure University safety policies are met and instill safety and help build a culture of safety throughout the academic program.
Salary and Appointment Level: Commensurate with experience and course assignment.

Qualifications: The minimum professional degree requirement is a B.S. or equivalent in engineering, science, or a technology field, AND an M.S. or M.E. in a field related to agriculture such as agricultural and biological engineering, mechanized agriculture, precision agriculture, or agricultural education with emphasis in agricultural mechanics. A Ph.D. in biological and agricultural engineering or a related discipline is preferred. Other qualifications:
Evidence of teaching excellence or potential for excellence, a commitment to quality undergraduate and professional education, and a record of scholarly or professional achievement in precision agriculture or an area of expertise related to the subject areas of the courses.
Significant technical experience, broad knowledge of agricultural practices and current technology.
Expertise in the subject matter areas for the specific courses to be taught.
Leadership and organizational skills relevant to successful teaching and a capability to stay abreast with the state-of-the-art and a desire to interact with campus educators and researchers.
An ability to teach, direct teaching assistants, instill safety culture in all academic programs, and maintain a safe learning environment.
Ability to develop courses and select appropriate course content.
