The Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus is highly ranked, with nineteen tenure-track faculty, 370 undergraduate students in two majors, and 80 graduate students. This is a full-time 9-month (academic year) tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level with approximately 50% research and 50% teaching responsibilities. ABE seeks an outstanding scholar with expertise in applying a systems approach to address the sustainability of bioprocessing technologies coupled with techniques for assessing quality of bioproducts. Such an approach is urgently needed in the food and bioproducts industry to improve food security, quality and safety globally, while simultaneously accounting for environmental and socio-economic impacts. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and related techniques have been shown to be useful noninvasive and nondestructive tools to determine rapidly the composition of many biomaterials. NIR correlations have been used to predict extractable starch yield in corn wet milling, glucose and ethanol yields in corn dry grind, as well as prediction of biomass composition in Miscanthus x giganteus and other energy crops. ABE has a research track record using NIR, including collaboration and interactions with federal laboratories such as NCAUR, NREL and INNL. Such quality assessment techniques facilitate bioprocessing and can serve multiple disciplines within ACES. The successful candidate will contribute to the ABE Department’s mission to integrate life and engineering for enhancement of complex living systems. The selected candidate is expected to develop an integrated research-teaching program that addresses the efficacy of bioprocessing technologies in a sustainable system context coupled with the development and application of tools and techniques for evaluating quality of processing outcomes and products, including food safety and nutrition. Expertise in food and bioprocess engineering is required. This position is part of an interdisciplinary cluster hire in Food and Agricultural Systems for Global Health within the College of ACES.
Responsibilities in Research and Teaching: This position will involve research, teaching, and service obligations. The successful candidate will establish and maintain an externally funded and independent research program focused on bioprocessing systems and bioproduct quality assessment. Through collaborations with other faculty, in particular, fellow members of the interdisciplinary cluster in the area of Food and Agricultural Systems for Global Health, key discoveries will be translated into national and global bioprocessing best practices. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at least two food and bioprocess engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and participate in online instruction at the graduate level. Specifically, the candidate will deliver a core course in the food and bioprocess engineering specialization, ABE 483 (Engineering Properties of Food Materials). The candidate will have opportunity to leverage activities in the Integrated Bioprocessing Research Laboratory (IBRL) to contribute to teaching, research and outreach efforts.
Synergy with Campus Excellence Themes and Strengths: The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate efforts with members of the Food and Agricultural Systems for Global Health cluster within the College of ACES and will be well positioned to collaborate with scientists across campus. This position is aligned with several campus initiatives and priorities such as the Nutrition and Food Security theme of the campus strategic plan, the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, and Carle-Illinois College of Medicine.

Qualifications: Candidate must have a PhD in food and bioprocess engineering or closely related discipline. Evidence of professional promise and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required. Candidate must have strong core knowledge of bioprocess engineering related to the production of bioproducts, biofuels and food materials from a range of biological materials.
Preferred qualifications: Cross-training and postdoctoral training in NIR spectroscopy and related measurement techniques, food and nutritional sciences, and environmental sciences, or closely related area; ability to secure extramural funding; a strong publication record; ability to mentor students; experience in college-level teaching; and engagement in professional associations are desired.
