The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Communications team leads the development and execution of strategic, multi-platform content that clearly and measurably advances the mission, vision, and brand of NC State University, CALS, and the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service (NCARS). CALS Communications applies a fully integrated suite of skills — communications strategy, marketing, web design, content creation, graphics, and videography — to support CALS and NCARS strategic communications and marketing plans. CALS Communications also provides communications consultation and services for the college's 12 departments, programs, administrative units and NC State Extension.
NCARS is the research arm of CALS, supporting more than 600 active basic and applied research projects in the agricultural and life sciences, with more than $130 million in annual expenditures. CALS research is conducted on more than 18 on-campus research facilities, as well as 4 field labs and 18 agricultural research stations covering more than 19,000 acres throughout the state. NC State Extension agents complete our discovery and development pipeline by taking research-based solutions to extension centers and fields in all 100 counties North Carolina counties for testing and refinement.
The CALS Science Communications and Marketing Specialist serves as the lead communicator for the Research in the college. The candidate will be proactive in helping NCARS and CALS Communications develop and implement strategic communications and marketing initiatives that help: elevate the reputation of NC State's agricultural and life sciences research enterprise among peer institutions and scientific audiences; support and promote the NC Plant Sciences Initiative (NC PSI) internally and externally, establishing NC State as the global leader in interdisciplinary plant sciences research; promote a culture of communication among CALS researchers through consultation and services that more broadly connects their work to funders, partners, and lay audiences; advance funding opportunities; nurture and expand research and industry partnerships; help explain, illustrate, and demonstrate to state and federal leaders the impact of the college's research portfolio on the state of North Carolina, the nation, and the world.
As a member of the CALS Communications team, the candidate will work collaboratively with teams from NC State University Communications and Marketing, NC State University Office of Research and Commercialization, NCARS and others to coordinate and produce effective communications and marketing products that include digital stories, social media strategy and content, email campaigns, print collateral, publications, videos, white papers, talking points, and other communications as needed. This position will work closely with NCARS administration, faculty, and staff to ensure communications accurately and precisely emphasize CALS research results and drive defined organizational priorities.
The successful candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to understand and translate the complexities of science into language that meets the needs of diverse audiences, including laypersons. The successful candidate will work well with a team and possess strong time management, problem-solving and project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and desired outcomes.
