NCASI, a non-profit research organization focusing on environmental issues of interest to the Forest Products Industry, is seeking an experienced, career-minded, individual for the position of Senior Research Scientist/Engineer at its West Coast Regional Center in Corvallis, OR.
Essential Job Functions:
This Senior Research Scientist/Engineer will have an aptitude for the science underpinning the development and implementation of water quality standards and experience providing technical support to forest products companies. The person filling the position will provide strategic and technical direction to NCASI, NCASI member companies (forest products and allied industries), and related trade associations. Primary responsibilities will include the following:
Possess knowledge of history, context, and basis for water quality standards and criteria derivation and implementation and have the ability to contribute valid scientific perspectives regarding methods for establishing and applying the standards and criteria
Maintain a current understanding of aquatic life criteria development in industry-relevant states, and identify concerns, risks, and implementation timeframes to proactively address challenges
Possess a basic knowledge of aquatic systems as it pertains to factors influencing water quality criteria development (e.g. sediment-water interactions, toxicity assessments, ecological and water quality patterns in aquatic systems)
Be able to synthesize and analyze data in appropriate ways, and to effectively and accurately communicate the results of these analyses to both scientific professionals and non-specialists
Understand the importance of variability and uncertainty, and the way in which these may be quantified, adjusted for, and/or mitigated in environmental decision-making
Ability to develop technical material, tools, or models that describe information and can be used by members, stakeholders, and/or regulatory agencies to evaluate, report, and manage environmental programs
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team-based organizational structure
Can read, absorb, and process complex technical information and has demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills

Master of Science degree in a relevant scientific discipline and five or more years of related experience
Proven track record of working with inter-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder teams on technical projects
Valid driver’s license and driving record insurable at standard rates
Additional Preferred Qualification:
PhD in a relevant scientific discipline
Strong familiarity with environmentally-related aspects of forest products company operations including knowledge of pulp, paper, and wood products manufacturing processes
Possess an in-depth knowledge of a broad variety of complex statistical procedures and techniques for interpreting existing data and forecasting conditions based on past data
