The opening: A Ph.D. student position is available on a lung mechanics project in biomedical engineering.
The problem: In the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary edema reduces pulmonary gas exchange. Mechanical ventilation assists gas exchange but causes ventilation induced lung injury (VILI), which impedes recovery.
Our previous findings: We made the first surface tension determinations in edematous alveoli. We found that VILI is attributable to heterogeneous alveolar flooding, and proportional to surface tension.
The doctoral project: Developing and testing surface tension-lowering treatments for VILI.
Required qualification: Undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
Desirable qualifications: Background in cardiovascular or pulmonary mechanics, physiology or biophysics.
The PI: Carrie E. Perlman trained in mechanical engineering at MIT and biomedical engineering at Northwestern University. She was a postdoctoral fellow in pulmonary physiology at Columbia University. Her lab is funded by NIH.
The environment: Stevens, in Hoboken, NJ, provides a multidisciplinary research training environment. The beautiful campus is located on the Hudson River, directly opposite and 10 minutes by train from lower Manhattan.
